Pick A Word For 2023 & Stick With It

It was several years ago when Steve Scherer introduced the concept of picking a word for the new year. This word would be something you could reference throughout the year. I was shocked how much it meant to me that first year and every year since. You can create goals that help make this word be a success throughout the year. It has encouraged me to see progress made monthly in many areas of my life. The word is something that helps me focus on growing and getting better as a person.

Here are words that our employees picked in 2022....

How do you pick your word?

Reflect on where you want to grow in the new year

  • What made you feel anxious this year?

  • What habits do you want to create?

  • What accomplishments did you achieve this year?
  • What prevents you from living your best life?
  • What makes you feel successful?
  • Who do you want to be known as?
  • How do you take care of your mental health?
  • What are the first three words that come to mind when you think about this new year?

Define your goals and focus areas for 2023

  • Relationships
  • Work
  • Physical Health
  • Wellness and Mental Health
  • Lifestyle and Hobbies
  • Life Milestones

Apply the S.M.A.R.T concept to each goal

  • Specific – Give details on goals and when you know you have completed it.
  • Measurable – Be sure you know short- and long-term benchmarks for success.
  • Achievable – What must you do to find success in this goal and what obstacles will you face?
  • Realistic – What can you achieve towards this goal per month?
  • Time-bound – Put a due date to each goal to create accountability.

My word for 2023 written on a sticky note above my desk....

The most important part of this word is keeping it FRONT & CENTER so you don’t forget. Stay positive and keep the commitment towards making your word part of your life. Share your word with others and explain why you picked it. The more you talk about it the more it becomes part of your focus. If you really want to kick it up a notch, ask others to hold you accountable on making this word a priority in 2023.

We wish you all a very happy new year and make 2023 be a great year!

Word of The Year – 2024
How have you entered the new year?   Did you create new year resolutions?   Did you create new goals?   Did you pick a word for you to focus on in the new year?   All of these are things I have done to go after 2024.   Why do we think a new year will change our life? One word…HOPE! I know one year is only separated by seconds, but it gives me HOPE that I have 365 days to work on improving. There is no way I am going to work on everything I want but it gives me a clean slate to try. As I write this my goal is to lose another 20lbs and I just ate three Oreo cookies. (SMH)    Why are goals so hard?   Because they aren’t supposed to be easy!   Goals push you and I out of our comfort zone. It also is really hard to stay committed and it is so easy to give up because it’s not easy.   I was talking with my thirteen-year-old son this weekend about a goal that he is trying to achieve. It’s really causing him a lot of frustration because the work is hard and the results are slow. He wants to hit his goals but the restrictions suck! I told him that I feel the same way when I try to go after a new goal. I think everyone does but those who hit their goals don’t give up.   It “feels” like we are climbing a mountain that is so high. There is no easy road or climb to the top. You wake up each day and have to climb more to get closer to the top. You might slip and fall which is heartbreaking in the moment. However, you don’t have to stay there. We all must keep trying so we know that a single moment of falling doesn’t stop us. Yes, it will suck to redo the climb but learn from your mistake(s) so you don’t repeat them.     What is my word for 2024? Consistency. Why? I have realized that I am a light switch often in my business and personal life. What is a light switch? It’s when you turn on and burn bright for a moment. However, that light goes out and there is nothing happening. I hate to admit the truth but that is where growth can start. Admit the truth and know where you need to improve. If I can do it, you can do it! 😊   For 2024 I am going to work hard to have a consistent routine with waking up, going to bed, exercising, working on my business & personal goals. The only way this will happen is if I plan time for each one and stick to it. This is going to be so hard for me because I love the freedom of choice. I recently did a personality testing and I am known as a “monkey” who loves to swing from tree to tree.   Knowledge is power and anything can change if you are committed to the plan. I have seen this as I lost 45lbs because I was committed to my health loss plan. Truth be told, I am a little heavier after the holidays, but I am good with it…sort of. 😊 I am glad I ate the food that gave me pleasure but now I need to do the work to get back to being healthy. That means not eating everyday like it’s the holidays and I need to get back to working out.   What is your word for 2024?   Life is a gift and we have an opportunity each day to get a little better.   If you need help picking your word, here is the blog from 2023 where I explained how to pick your word of the year.   There are other resources that can help you stay focused on your goals. Book- Atomic Habits Planner – Full Focus Book – 7 Habits of Highly Effective People   You can do this because I can I do it. You are not alone. Together we can do anything we want with the right commitment, focus and desire. Here is cheering you on to an amazing 2024!   Be better than me, Patrick   NEED MORE? Strategy, Planning, Execution: Paintball & Business
This weekend I had the opportunity to be part of my wife’s family reunion. The South came to Wisconsin for a wonderful weekend of food, fellowship, and paintball. Yep! The family that shoots each other stays together. No that is not how the expression goes but it worked for us. I learned several things while playing paintball this weekend. First, I am terrible at it. Second, it requires a lot more skill than just shooting paintballs out of your gun. You must be strategic, plan your moves carefully and execution will depend on your tools, or you will not be successful. OMG, that is just like running a business!   STRATEGY Each team is placed at opposite sides. You have a team of 5-10 people. The ref starts the clock and you have an opportunity to shoot each other. The team with the most players still playing when the time is up wins. I was with several teams for six matches, and I saw a lot. There are some players that have tons of experience, and you have guys like me that have no idea what they are doing. How do you work as a team with a wide variety of experience? The team does their own thing individually or you work together. No one is a captain, but I saw leaders show up. I was standing in the back middle when a guy I had never met, who knows with masks on, asked if I would want to stay back and he would move forward. We worked out a system, so we knew who was going to what role and understand where each player was going. I saw others do their own individual plan. That worked out till everyone got taken out and they were left alone. The odds of five players vs. one is not a good strategy. The game was stopped to show mercy to that one player. I learned that the team that works together with a plan is the one that will win!     PLANNING YOUR MOVES My youngest son was able to play paintball for the first time. My wife’s nephew, Taylor, is a paintball warrior, so he offered to take my son under his watch. It was so cool to watch Taylor protect my son and teach him how to stay low, shoot carefully and told him when to move forward or stay back. My son trusted his cousin instantly because he knew he was in a situation that required a guide. Our employees need to be able to trust its leaders especially when they don’t know what the next move should be. A good leader communicates well and often. My nephew could have let my son alone to do his own agenda, but he didn’t. They moved together and were in sync. Clear instructions were given before execution was made. That is how business should be when we are leading teams or one person. Don’t give up the plan and do your own thing. My son was left alone when my nephew got hit with the paintball, but he didn’t panic. He knew what to do because he had been taught with clear direction. That was so cool to watch my son grow in that moment and find success without letting fear take him out.       EXECUTION “Everyone has a plan till they get punched in the mouth (Mike Tyson).” I had a strategy, planned my moves, and failed on my execution during my paintball battles. Yep, I can honestly say that I failed before I even started by wearing the wrong pants. They were too big which caused me to not be able to move quickly. I was done before I even got started. Next time, if there is one, I will be wearing the right clothes. The other issue was my gun did not work properly. As my dad always said, “It is not your fault but it is your problem!” I tried to shoot but nothing came out. The gun was jammed and would not shoot the paintballs. I didn’t realize that till after the game was over. Do you ever wonder in business why your efforts are not making results happen? Maybe you have the wrong tools like me?! Take time to examine your results and be sure to ask questions on why you are not getting the results you want. “Hope is not a strategy, and no one drifts into excellence (Steve Scherer).”   In conclusion, I am so glad my wife’s nephew planned this family affair for us. We hope to keep the tradition going. Not sure if it fits for your family but what if? I promise one thing for sure; you will enjoy shooting your family legally. 😊     NEED MORE?
