I was in conversation with the head of one of my kids' schools recently, and of course, the conversation landed on leadership.  

I said to him, "John Maxwell talks about the leadership lid. You are the lid on your organization's growth.

As soon as you stop growing, so will the teachers and, ultimately, the school. Keep growing. Your influence on the teachers directly impacts my son's life." 


Today's final installment of this three-part series is all about us--the leader.


1. Lead by Example: The Power of Authenticity

As leaders, we are the compass of our teams. A compass shows us the way. Our authenticity sets the tone for trust to flourish. We must be genuine in our actions, transparent in our decisions, and consistent in our values. 

When our team witnesses our unwavering commitment to honesty and integrity, they will be inspired to follow suit. Remember, authenticity is not just a trait; it's a culture that begins with us.


2. Empower Growth: Nurturing Through Constructive Feedback

A great leader is not just a director but a mentor and guide. We hold the responsibility to empower growth through constructive feedback. This means not shying away from pointing out areas of improvement but doing so in a way that uplifts and inspires.

By nurturing the potential within each team member, we create an atmosphere of trust where constructive criticism is seen as a tool for development, not a weapon for criticism.


3. Foster Collaboration: The Essence of Mutual Support

A team is a collective, a unit bound by a shared purpose. It's our responsibility to foster a culture of mutual support.

Encourage your team members to appreciate one another's strengths and to lend a helping hand when needed.


When the foundation of collaboration is solid, trust flourishes naturally. This environment is one where each member knows they are valued and their contributions matter.

Take it further: think beyond your team or department. Where can you influence the bond of trust with other departments? 



4. Eliminate Toxicity: Guarding Against Destructive Leadership

The responsibility to cultivate trust also involves guarding against toxic leadership.

Toxic behavior erodes trust faster than any external factor. As leaders, we must identify and address any signs of favoritism, micromanagement, or lack of transparency. This is an act of intention; do it on purpose. 


By eliminating toxicity, we create a space where trust can thrive and authentic praise can flow freely.


You gotta earn it!! 

A phrase my youngest brother says to the rest of us regularly is, "You gotta earn it!".

Typically, he's referencing a traveling hat, the trophy for whoever shoots the biggest buck that year.


The curious thing is that whoever possesses the hat had to put in over a few dozen hours of prep to get a single shot that could be thrown off by swirling winds, a pencil-thin branch, or a wandering coyote. 

Regardless of circumstances, that hat says you capitalized on the opportunity after all the prep. 


Similarly, trust is not granted; it's earned.


Through authentic leadership, we pave the way for trust to flourish. Let's lead by example, empower growth, foster collaboration, and guard against toxicity. In doing so, we create an environment where our teams trust us and one another, and the whole organization is lifted together.

3 Overlooked Leadership Characteristics: Curiosity, Winsomeness & Deference
My Name is Maximus Decimus Meridius One of my favorite lines in one of my favorite movies is when "The Spaniard" reveals his true identity to Rome's new, evil Emperor. They're in the middle of the Colosseum in front of thousands of Roman citizens. The Spaniard is slave, but his fame has risen as a leader of the gladiators, defeating soldiers who possess the best training and weapons. The build-up is palpable as the Emperor makes his way down to the sandy Colosseum floor to hear the name of this doomed hero. After telling the Emperor that his name is "gladiator," he turns his back to him. "How dare you turn your back to me?! Slave! You will remove your helmet and tell me your name." The music builds. The helmet comes off. The gladiator slowly turns. "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."   Chills. Wide eyes. Willingness to follow this guy with a crazy long name and traumatizing past. If you haven't seen the movie Gladiator, you should. It's much more than an action movie and the story holds even after 20+ years. Maximus displays the characteristics of a leader. He's smart, loyal, focused, disciplined, honorable, committed, honest, and proven on a literal battlefield. His men reflect the qualities he lives out. I want to be like Maximus. And in my best moments, maybe I am like him. However, I've always had this other side to my personality that didn't seem to jive with a bloodied warrior. For example, I bet Maximus didn't ever hope his joke would produce a spit-take. Or hide for 10 minutes to scare his kids. Or ask his Pastor about dinosaurs. I do, though. Which leads to a fun discovery: Leadership is about influence. Influence is NOT predicated on one personality trait.   The Overlooked Ingredients   Before I jump into the three traits that I think get overlooked when talking about leadership, I have to give credit. These qualities were brought to my attention because of the loving people around me. I suppose I did my part by showing up and showing interest, but several people have helped articulate qualities in me that they saw as valuable. Left on my own, it would've been a much longer road of discovery. Here they are: Curiosity, Whimsicalness, Deference Curiosity Kids ask a lot of questions. Sometimes it'll drive you bonkers as a parent. (No. We still aren't there yet.) But somewhere along the way, we grow up a bit and grow out of being curious. At least not bold enough to follow curiosity beyond a Google search or two.   One of my favorite tools is wordhippo.com, a more fun thesaurus. There were a bunch of helpful examples on that site, based on context. Below is a screenshot.     Curiosity in your workplace might look like someone asking "what if" and "why not" type questions. However, it could also be someone who doesn't take "it's how we've always done it" as a satisfying answer. Chasing curiosity without direction can get lost in a jungle surrounded by Narcos. However, with oversight and encouragement, curiosity can lead to discovering the Post-it note.   Winsomeness Recently I was asked to give a 5-minute talk at my church, basically recapping an initiative from the previous year. During the monolog, I stopped and turned to a Pastor friend of mine and said, "how am I doing? Am I good for another minute?" It wasn't planned, and I wasn't going for a cute moment. It just felt right. I was excited about the topic and sharing from the heart, and when that happens, I tend to ramble.   Afterward, I thought about that moment and wondered if I had come across as aloof or disrespectful, but I didn't say anything. Later that night, I got a text from one of the elders saying, "thank you for sharing tonight. You did an excellent job of representing Beth and speaking winsomely about the effect the Word has had on your relationships." Those few sentences meant a ton to me. Then I looked up winsome(ness) because I figured it wasn't what I was thinking. (Did he thank me for being Tinker Bell?) Again, from wordhippo:     Dang. Not only was this sage encouraging me with his text, but with a single word told me it had attractiveness to it.    Winsomeness in your place of work could look like a person who interjects an unexpected funny story when discussing their yearly business plan. But, it's also someone who takes pride in not just what is presented but the aesthetics of the presentation itself. Another example is that colleague who, after asking the waitresses name, tells her, "You know what, Shelly, bring me your favorite dish but don't tell me what it is." The winsome among us see adventure in small things, sprinkle charisma into daily conversation, and fold us around them into the story. (and often we love being in the story with them because they see the world in such an optimistic light)   Deference After hearing this word used to describe someone, I respected, I, of course, looked it up. I found that the quality of deference seems to underpin the action of servant leadership.  Deference is the first cousin of humility. One more time, wordhippo.com     Deference could look like restraint from the most talented or most experienced to benefit those who need an opportunity. You could take the lead that just came in, and you'd nail it. But knowing that your colleague (and ultimately the company) would benefit from getting more reps, you pass it to the less experienced. This quality shows in mentors, teachers, good bosses, parents, soldiers, nurses, and a dozen other roles. Maximus was a 'loyal servant of Rome.' It's more than being nice. It's nice--with a backbone and a telescope. This person likes to say 'yes' to requests, but they aren't a doormat. They'll hand you a cup of coffee and will also help keep you from running the ship into an iceberg.     Ideas For Application Are you lacking creative ideas for bringing on new customers or donors? Set up a brainstorming session with the curious and winsome. Put them in a room with a whiteboard, some coffee, a few open-ended questions, and see what comes out of it. Don't have the money for a manager but could use the help? Investigate the possibility of having a Team Lead (player/coach). Deference will be your friend here. Not the only quality needed, but a great place to start. Ask the curious to lead team collaboration. Embolden the deferent to mentor new hires. Let the winsome tell stories of wins, losses, and lessons learned. Gladiator is one of the best movies of all time. And leadership is influence. Trust is the foundation of any thriving team, and one powerful way to cultivate it is through genuine encouragement. In part two of this three-part series, we'll delve into how authentic encouragement motivates trust and serves as an antidote to toxic leadership, which can erode trust within teams.   1. Intrinsic Motivation: Authentic encouragement operates on the intrinsic motivation principle. It's not about using external rewards or manipulation tactics; instead, it's about recognizing and valuing the genuine efforts of team members. This core principle builds a foundation of trust as individuals come to know that their contributions are esteemed for all the right reasons.   Fancy words aside. You make accurate, positive comments on genuine personal efforts as the leader. Doing this stokes the fire of internal motivation for your reports to keep doing what was reinforced. (doing an excellent job with their job)   2. Constructive Feedback Fosters Growth: Pairing praise with constructive feedback in a genuine manner is a potent tool for nurturing trust. When team members trust that feedback is given with their growth and best interests in mind, it transforms constructive criticism from a source of apprehension to a vehicle for personal and collective development.   This approach counters the negative impact of toxic leadership, which often fails to provide constructive guidance. This leads us to our next point.    3. Countering Toxic Leadership: Authentic encouragement actively counters the destructive effects of toxic leadership. Your people come to you with their own experiences—some good, some not good.   Toxic leaders tend to manipulate, exploit, and create divisive team environments.   By promoting authentic encouragement, teams can counteract these toxic behaviors. It establishes a culture of openness, transparency, and mutual respect, effectively neutralizing the detrimental influence of toxic leaders. (one of my favorite toxic leaders...get it?)   4. Mutual Support: Authentic encouragement is the linchpin in fostering a culture of mutual support within the team. When individuals are confident that their contributions will be recognized and valued, they are more likely to collaborate, assist, and uplift their colleagues.   And you want this for your team. Not simply because it's a better work environment for them, you can't and shouldn't always be answering questions. An indicator of health in this area is teammates feeling ownership of others' success.    Things are dealt with and overcome without your involvement.   This dynamic creates a powerful shield against the divisive tendencies of toxic leadership, which often pits team members against one another.   5. Long-Term Relationships: The sustained practice of authentic encouragement builds solid and lasting relationships anchored in trust.   Over time, team members grow to expect sincerity and dependability from one another. This sense of reliability counters the volatility associated with toxic leadership, which can lead to high turnover rates and fractured team dynamics.   6. Positive Work Environment: A culture of genuine encouragement contributes to a positive work environment. Positivity bolsters team morale and, consequently, trust among team members.   This positive atmosphere counterbalances the toxic atmosphere often engendered by toxic leaders, who can create a hostile or tense work environment.   Authentic encouragement is a transformative force within teams.   It motivates intrinsic drive, supports growth, fosters mutual support, and acts as a potent antidote to toxic leadership.   By actively countering toxic behaviors, promoting open communication, and creating a positive work environment, authentic encouragement is a beacon of trust within teams.   This practice fortifies teams against the corrosive effects of toxic leadership, paving the way for collaboration, growth, and sustained success.   NEED MORE?
